For the past eight years I have been fortunate enough to have had access to a private game farm with a highly successful white rhino breeding project. Over the years I got to visit regularly and was exposed to the many difficulties faced by the breeding program.

The much publicised poaching epidemic ravaging the rhino populations world wide was always on the forefront of every bodies minds. The rhino were guarded twenty four hours a day by well armed guards that followed the rhino at an unobtrusive distance. The hardship these guards faced out in the elements on the freezing winter nights or the extreme heat of mid summer showed their unwavering dedication.

I learnt how difficult rhino breeding was, how first time mothers can lose a calf through inexperience. It’s heart wrenching it experience this first hand. Rhino are a lot more social than I had realised and the more time I spent with them over the years, the more I got to understand their relationships. I also realised how they got to identify humans by their scent, and became accustomed to our presence.

Getting up close to these magnificent creatures and spending time with them gave me a special appreciation for them. They are peculiar beasts, but they have a special place in my heart and I have developed a strong affection for them.

The rhino poaching crisis needs to be addressed immediately and more top secret breeding projects like this need to be set up and well funded to ensure the future of the species.
